After grommet insertion, most patients will not experience pain. Mild
irritations may be controlled with simple pain medications. Antibiotics are not
routinely prescribed unless the doctor deems it necessary and this is usually in
the form of ear drops. Children may need to stay out of school for 1-
2days/weeks for recovery. Water precautions should be maintained by
avoidance or by use of suitable ear plugs. These should be worn during
swimming in case patients are instructed to do so. Patients will be given
scheduled appointments, usually monthly. Patients are advised to return to the
hospital or a nearby facility in case they experience increased pain and/or
bleeding from the operated ear.
